Description

Ivory, end of the 7th Century.

Elephant tusks from the Bajo de la Campana (a submerged site off the coast of Murcia, Spain) are part of the cargo of a Phoenician ship from the end of the 7th Century BC. Over 50 tusks have been recovered from the site, some with traders' marks, together with other remains showing Phoenician interest in raw materials from North Africa and the far West, and an active trade with the local communities.
