Summary edit
DescriptionCarving a Frieze in Japan (1914 by Elstner Hilton).jpg |
The sculptors in this studio appear to have specialized in carving friezes, judging from the piece they were working on and the finished pieces in the background. It would be interesting to know whether any of the carvings seen here are still extant. This photo is from an album Elstner Hilton compiled in Japan between 1914 and 1918. Elstner was my spouse's uncle. While Uncle Elstner sometimes annotated photos that required an explanation, he never dated the pictures. So all we know is they were taken between January, 1914 and December, 1918. |
