Description
English: Carving in the city walls. This carved anchor and '692Ft' refers to the length of Brunel's ship the Great Eastern, and indicates the distance between this point and the Phoenix Tower. In the 19th century a local man commissioned a stone mason to carve the stone. There is some illegible text above and below the numbers, and given the story I wonder if it used to say 'Great Eastern'? Some short distance beyond the Phoenix Tower I recently discovered another single anchor carved into the parapet overlooking the canal. I don't know whether that second anchor has any connection with this one. See also 665204. Thanks to the 'bwpics' website for the information http://www.bwpics.co.uk/kaleyard2.html Outside the walls is the pigeon house, the only place in Chester where it is legal to feed the pigeons.
