O antigo conjunto de casas foi reformulado pelo comerciante flamengo João Esmeraldo, do que se encarregou o pedreiro Garcia Gomes, em 1495. Cristóvão Colombo teria residido nessa casa em 1498, na sua terceira passagem viagem à América.
