English: Casa del Gavilan was a private residence built around 1911-1916, on the edge of what is now the Philmont Scout Ranch, a national training and retreat center for teenage scouts in Northern New Mexico. The mountainous ridge in the background is a spur off the Sangre de Cristo Range, the southernmost tail of the Rockies, and the triangular sheer-faced peak sticking up is known as the Tooth of Time. As the story goes, fur trappers and wagon trains of other European-American settlers coming south over Raton Pass (on what is now the Colorado/New Mexico border) in 1830s Mexico, used the dentate landmark to estimate two more weeks' travel time to reach Santa Fe. The striking 100-ft. wide edifice has been operated for several years as an inn, priding itself on its unusual design, its gorgeous natural setting, and the quietness and solitude to be found in this remote location.
