The VERTICAL TRANSPORTATION 167 object of this is to secure greatstability. Some such provision isnecessary, because the load on a treadis very liable to unsymmetrical dis-tribution. Especially on the inclinethe four wheels are each providedwith what is in effect a separate rail.The rails corresponding to the for-ward wheels of a step are situatedahead of those corresponding to therear wheels. This is a necessary pro-vision to enable the wheelbase to be supported while maintaining a hori-zontal position. In the vicinity of thelandings all rails are about at the samelevel. When once the various parts of astep, including the truck, are assem-bled, it is, apart from the wheels them-selves, a rigid whole. There is a hori-zontal arm which carries the twowheels at the end of a step, but theforward and rear part of this armare in different vertical planes. The

The passenger standson one of the cars; or, if he chooses,he may step from one to the other.This important fact marks the esca-lator off from every other system. Atno time does the surface on which the One who stands near either endof a step will, naturally, rest his handupon the rail. The upper surface ofthis is so arranged that it movesalong at the same rate as the pas-senger, and thus provides a supportwhich travels with him. In fact, the whole escalator pro-position with reference to the com-fort and convenience of the passen-ger has been thoroughly worked out.
