Title |
Cast copper alloy spherical "crotal" bell |
||
Description |
English: Complete decorated copper alloy cast spherical "crotal" bell of possible seventeenth century date. Length 36mm, maximum diameter 29mm. Weight 27.09g. The suspension loop at the top of the bell is sub-rectangular in shape. The upper and lower hemisphere is divided by a prominent rib. At either side of the suspension loop (about half way down the side of the upper hemisphere) is a sound hole which is 5mm in diameter. Two sound holes in the lower hemisphere are integral with the sound "slit". The upper part of the bell is decorated with a repeated sunburst pattern which is barely visible. Decoration on the lower part of the bell is in the form of six leaf motifs (three either side of the sound "slit". These leaves point downwards. However, the central leaf on one side is superimposed with a shield-shape moulding enclosing a "T"-shaped symbol which may represent a founder's hammer. Most of the surface of the bell is japanned, although the copper alloy is a reddish colour where it is exposed. The sound "pea", sub-round in form, remains intact within the bell and this appears to be made of iron. |
