O castelo de Monsaraz é suposto ter sido edificado por D. Dinis, em 1310, sobre uma estrutura defensiva já existente, que terá começado por um castro pré-histórico e mais tarde por construções romanas, visigóticas e árabes.
Na época da Reconquista Cristã da Península Ibérica, no reinado de D. Afonso Henriques, este castelo foi conquistado mas voltaria a cair na mão dos muçulmanos, para só no reinado de D. Sancho II, em 1232, passar definitivamente para a posse portuguesa. Nesta reconquista participaram os Cavaleiros da Ordem do Templo, a quem D. Sancho II doou o castelo e seus domínios. Com a extinção desta Ordem, o castelo passou para a Ordem de Cristo e já no reinado de D. Dinis, foi construída a Torre de Menagem, que ainda hoje domina a paisagem.
Durante a Guerra da Restauração, o castelo foi adaptado para as novas realidades da guerra, com a criação de suportes para a artilharia.
