O castelo de Montalegre tem o início da sua construção atribuída ao rei D. Afonso III, por volta de 1270, mas as obras continuaram nos reinados seguintes e ainda no reinado de D. Afonso IV, por volta de 1330, há referências a obras, nomeadamente à construção da Torre de Menagem. As preocupações com esta fortificação justificavam-se com a necessidade de defesa da fronteira, do reino de Portugal, de que esta região fez parte a partir da independência e que ao longo de séculos foi ameaçada por Castela. O local onde foi edificada apresenta testemunhos de uma ocupação remota, provavelmente com um castro pré-histórico e depois pelos romanos, visigodos, muçulmanos e voltou à posse cristã a partir do século VIII. Durante a crise de 1383, devido à morte do rei D. Fernando, sem herdeiros masculinos, com sua filha D. Beatriz, casada com o rei de Castela, a reclamar o trono português, o que não interessava por significar a perda da independência, este castelo tomou o partido de D. Beatriz. A resolução da crise passava pela possibilidade de subir ao trono, ou o filho do Rei Pedro I e Inês de Castro, a viver em Castela, ou João, Grão-Mestre de Aviz, filho de D. Pedro I e da aia de Inês de Castro, Teresa Lourenço, optou-se então pelo segundo, e uma guerra com Castela, que estava ao lado de D. Beatriz. Já no final desta guerra, por volta de 1385, o castelo foi submetido pelas forças de D. João I, que o doou ao Condestável, D. Nuno Álvares Pereira. Depois de 1640, com a Guerra da Restauração da independência portuguesa a estrutura defensiva foi modernizada para utilizar artilharia.
