O Castelo de Mourão foi construído no início de 1343, no reinado de D. Afonso IV. Construído no ponto mais alto da vila de Mourão, é composto por uma alvenaria em xisto da região, mármore e granito. A planta apresenta-se em retângulo, reforçada por seis torres quadradas e aberta por duas portas a de Menagem e a da Torre dos Pretos. Com as sucessivas guerras, o Castelo teve de ser reconstruido com ajuda da Câmara de Évora por volta de 1661. O arquiteto João Nunes Ticono por volta de 1663 colocou em marcha o seu plano de recuperação e daí nasceram seis Atalaias implantadas em cima de cerros elevados que protegiam a fortaleza no sentido do rio Guadiana. As torres feitas em alvenaria, hoje em ruinas encontram-se nos seguintes lugares: Atalaia de Cuncos, Atalaia das Ferrarias, Atalaia da Meada Alta, Atalaia do Meio, Atalaia da Abegoaria e Atalaia da Coxa. <a href="http://www.roteirodoalqueva.com/patrimonio/castelo-de-mourao" rel="noreferrer nofollow">www.roteirodoalqueva.com/patrimonio/castelo-de-mourao</a> |
