Local call number: PR03387 Title: Castillo de San Marcos: St. Augustine, Florida Date: ca. 1950 General note: Castillo de San Marcos is the oldest masonry fort in the United States. The Spanish began construction on the fort in 1672, following several attempted sieges of the city by the British. The Castillo replaced various wooden forts built by the Spanish in St. Augustine between 1565 and 1672. The fort remained active throughout the colonial period, the Seminole Wars, and during the American Civil War. From 1821, when the United States took control of Florida, until 1942 the fort was known as Fort Marion, in honor of Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion (also known as the "Swamp Fox"). In 1942, Congress authorized renaming the fort Castillo de San Marcos. Since being transferred to the Park Service in 1933, the Castillo has been a popular tourist attraction in St. Augustine.
