Description

British Railways Leyland Bus Limited/British Rail Engineering Limited class 141 two car diesel-mechanical railbus unit formed of 55534 and 55514 of Neville Hill T&RSMD stands in Castleford station forming the 16:26 (Daily) Castleford to Leeds. Saturday 18th April 1987

Castleford Station signal box is located by the Up Normanton line at the west end of Castleford railway station, and is a North Eastern Railway Type S1a design which opened in 1882 controlling the adjacent Welbeck Street level crossing. The signal box was extended by the end of the 1880s due to an increased track layout, and the level crossing was closed and replaced by a pedestrian subway around the start of the 20th century. A 40 lever McKenzie and Holland Number 16 frame was installed in 1914 which remained until closure on 13th September 1997. The signal box closed along with Whitwood and Castleford Gates signal boxes with signalling transferred to the new Castleford signal box. The signal box remains in a derelict condition

33 and 38 signal are carried on a British Railways North Eastern Region left hand bracket on an all welded main stem which was installed in early 1958 in connection with the introduction of diesel multiple units, replacing a two disc shunting signal carrying 21 signal (backing down main to up main-disc) with 22 signal (backing down main to down sidings-disc) below it. When installed 33 signal (down main to up branch) and 38 signal (down main to up main) with Castleford Gates signal box 8 signal down main distant below it were joined by 30 signal (down main to down sidings) carried right hand bracket attached to the main stem

The Main Iines between Castleford Station and Fryston signal boxes were renamed the Normanton lines on 20th November 1983
