editDescriptionCastles of Munster, Derryowen, Clare - geograph.org.uk - 1541359.jpg |
English: Castles of Munster: Derryowen, Clare Located in a remote area near the Burren National Park to the NE of Templebannagh Lough, parts of the SE and SW walls still stand six storeys high. Although in O'Shaugnessy territory, it was acquired by George Cusack in 1589. He was killed in 1599 by the O'Briens of Leamaneh in revenge for ordering the execution of Donogh O'Brien in 1582 (when he was sherriff of Clare). Visible is an opening in the facing corner called an angle loop, through which muskets or missiles could be fired. |
