Description: "J-Day + 3. Casts are applied to patient from 163rd Infantry, a casualty from a Japanese landmine explosion. Operating room is at the 8th Portable Surgical Hospital. The Albee-type orthopedic table was made by Surgical Technician 3rd Class Henkel (right foreground). He used Japanese pipe and ammunition rods; one piece from a stove pump; one piece from windshield of a Jeep. Zamboanga." [Image (original print) may be reversed] This caption indicates that the photograph was take three days after J-Day in the Philippines. The term "J-day" was used in both world wars to denote the day an assault occurred. In this instance, it was likely the Battle of Mindanao, which took place from 10 March - 15 August 1945. The operation, known as VICTOR V, was an attempt by US forces and Philippine guerillas to liberate the southern islands from Japan. Zamboanga is a large, southwestern peninsula of Mindanao, an island in the Philippine archipelago.
