in the latter half of the eighteenth century. 47. Monumental Chandelier (Lustre) of bronze, cast, chased, and gilt, with three great branches of four lights each. Thecomposition comprises conventional and floral scrollwork,• festoons of flowers, and, in the centre, a vase. The Chande-lier is the work of Jacques Cafneri, (B. 1678. D. 1755),and bears the signature Caffieri a Paris 1751. As aproduction of the Louis Quinze period, rising in breadth andnobility of design almost to monumental grandeur, this pieceis unique. Middle Style and Period of Louis Quinze. (See Plate No. 8.) 48. Mantelpiece of grey porphyry, with Caryatides of dark bronze as supports, and decorative mounts of bronze, cast,chased, and gilt. Modern imitation of the Louis-Quinze Style, in the phase associatedwith the Caffieri. 49. Iiargre Wall Blirror in a frame-work of wood, carved and gilt. (No. 560 in Armoury Catalogue) Oblong: casket, of walnut wood, the sides divided into oblong panels, moulded baseand border to the cover. Each panel is decorated withformally arranged groups of fruit, flowers, and scrolls inengraved, polished, and partly stained stags horn andmother-o-pearl. The borders have delicate scroll workinlaid with brass, &c. The two panels on the cover have inlaidon them dolphins and cornucopise. In the centre of thebase of the front side is an oval cartouche containing thefollowing inscription and date :—Fait en Massevaux,par Jean Conrad TornierMonteur dharquebisses Len 1680.14 in. high, 24f in. wide by Hi in. deep.
