English: Celebrating 40 years of LUPTS at the National Tramway Museum, Crich, Derbyshire, UK. Members of the Liverpool University Public Transport Society were instrumental in saving tram 869 for preservation. University regulations precluded the Society from owning the tram, and a separate organisation, the Merseyside Tramcar Preservation Society was quickly formed. Members of LUPTS came to Crich in 1989 to celebrate 40 years of its existence and to ride on the then newly restored tram. Liverpool route 40 was one of the final routes in service when the trams were finally abandoned in 1957. The bus hired for the trip from Liverpool is one of the London Transport type Routemaster used by British European Airways (BEA) for their dedicated service between central London and Heathrow Airport. At the time it was owned by a Merseyside bus operator, painted in a traditional Liverpool Corporation bus livery. It was subsequently preserved in its original red livery. |
