Kirkcaldie & Stains Ltd put in a tender to provide the materials for the nurses uniforms of World War I, along with other stores Herbert, Haynes & Co, Dunedin and DIC (Drapery & General Importing Company NZ). The letter is addressed to Miss Maclean, who was the matron in chief of the newly established New Zealand Army Nursing Service. Hester Maclean selected and equipped all army nurses during the war and escorted the first 50 nurses to Egypt in April 1915. The letter with the samples of material for the uniforms and capes is from an Army Department file dated from 1915-18. Archives Reference: AD64/8 [R21079047] The photograph of the nurses is part of the official photographs of the NZEF [New Zealand Expeditionary Force], described as the H series. The nursing sisters look out from the windows of a New Zealand Stationary Hospital building in Wisques, France, during World War I. Above the door is a sign which reads "The Popp Inn". The photograph was taken on the 16th of August, 1918, by Henry Armytage Sanders who was one of the official war photographers. |
