| Description |
English: A March 2021 view of the rear section of the Center of Progress building on the New York State Fairgrounds, as seen from the northeast. One of the handful of buildings designed for the fairgrounds by the Buffalo architecture firm of Green & Wicks, the Center of Progress (originally known as the Manufacturers & Liberal Arts Building) dates to 1908 and is a good example of the monumental Neoclassical style favored by the firm's architects for institutional buildings of importance. The massive interior hallway that makes up the bulk of the building is topped by a Roman arch that makes for a vaulted ceiling in the spacious interior. Meanwhile, the main façade (not seen here) features a recessed central pavilion fronted by a colonnaded entrance terrace with richly decorated Corinthian columns, flanked by projecting lateral wings whose columns are engaged into a recessed portion of the exterior wall, with a low-pitched hipped roof undergirded by an imposing iron cornice with ornate brackets. |
