Aternae Memoriae Sacrum Thomae Ridgeway Armigero claris natalibus orto virtute propria clariori moribus suavissimis pietate in Deum comitate in amicos hospitalitate in omnes insigni literis tum divinis tum humanis non mediocriter imbuto pacis justitiaq(ue) annis plus minus moderatori vigilantissimo litium controversiarum inter proximos pendentium prompto et aequissimo discussori patriae studio industria ac solicitudine plurimum consulenti duplici connubio foelici (priore e clara Southcottorum familia et Barnehusii cohaerede faemina virtute pietate ac modestia ornatissima multiplici sobole octo filiis et septem filiabus faecunda altera e clara Milsorum (communiter Mills) familia oriunda) vitam hanc molestiis et curis plenissimam A(nn)o D(omi)ni 1593 mense Junii placide relinquenti his requiescenti perfectam corporis et anima gloriam et glorificationem in Christo expectanti.

Which may be translated as:

“Sacred to the eternal memory of Thomas Ridgeway, Esquire, sprung from illustrious origins, in his own virtue more illustrious still, in his morals most pleasant, in his piety to God kindly, towards all his friends hospitable, outstanding in letters both divine and secular, not moderately saturated with peace and justice ………………………………………………………………………………….
Twice happy in marriage (the first from the illustrious family of the Southcotts and a co-heiress of the Barnehuses, most adorned with feminine virtue, piety and modesty, eloquent with multiple offspring, eight sons and seven daughters; the second sprung from the illustrious family of the Milses (commonly Mills)). Leaving peacefully this life most full of burdens and cares in the year of our Lord 1593 in the month of June, resting ….. expecting glorification in Christ.
Thomas Ridgeway son (and) heir, decorated with knightly dignity, to that most undefeated king James the First, vice-treasurer of Ireland and preceptor-general and treasurer (as they call it) at war and one of the most secret counsellors of the same reign, of love and piety therefore most sorrowful places this”.
