Summary edit

Description
English: Chùa Từ Hiếu Buddhist Cultural Center of Buffalo, 647 Fillmore Avenue, May 2020. Built in 1915, the design by city-employed architect Howard Beck is an interpretation of Neoclassicism that owes a heavy debt of influence to the Federal style; you can see this especially at the front entrance, flanked by Ionic columns and topped with an elliptical fanlight. It first served as home to Police Station No. 8, and at the time of its closure in 1998 was one of only two remaining pre-1945 police stations in the city still in use as such. Since then, it has served the local Vietnamese Buddhist community as a temple and cultural center. The outdoor courtyard and garden at right were opened in 2014; it's decorated with a set of stone pillars imported from Vietnam and centered on a statue of Quan Âm, the bodhisattva of mercy to whom many refugees prayed for safe travel to their new homeland, and plays host to cultural events and gatherings such as group meditation sessions and an annual Vietnamese New Year celebration featuring traditional music and dance.
