Description
English: The Charles A. Pooley House, 24 Ashland Avenue, Buffalo, New York, July 2021. Built in 1889 from a design by Charles Day Swan, this is a typical if somewhat austere example of the architect's favored Shingle style. The most eye-catching feature here is undoubtedly the enormous gables on the cross-gabled roof, particularly the projecting one facing the front with its deeply recessed window and balcony. A small round-arched lunule crowns it, giving the entire construct the impression of a Palladian window. Underneath is an understated second-floor bay window and a hip-roofed porch delineated by a partially closed shingle balustrade. The house's longtime owner was Charles Augustus Pooley (1854-1932), a prominent attorney and later State Supreme Court Justice who resided there until his death.
