Description
English: Charles Breithecker House, 48 Grape Street, Buffalo, New York, October 2021. Built around 1867, this is a classic example of a vernacular Italianate "worker's cottage" of the type that was common during the middle 19th century in working- and middle-class precincts of what are now Buffalo's inner neighborhoods. Particularly exemplary are the paired brackets that support the projecting eave of the front-gabled roof, as well as the twin round-arched windows on the second floor surrounded by prominent window heads and framing. The front porch, with its rough-hewn stone base and Doric pilasters, is a later addition. The house was built for German-born basketmaker Charles Breithecker (1830-1918), who lived there with his family until his death. At the time the photo was taken, Preservation Buffalo Niagara was spearheading a grassroots campaign to prevent a proposed demolition of the building and promote its listing as a local landmark and/or on the National Register of Historic Places (for the latter of which it had previously been deemed eligible).
