Description
English: Government Hill from the New Harbour Road, Singapore (1844) depicts the titular landscape with a noticeable lack of human presence, though the location was a bustling colonial township lined with shophouse rows and named streets. Formally, Dyce stuck to the aesthetic conventions of European landscape painting, structuring diagonal patterns in his compositions and positioning framing objects in the foreground to draw the viewer's attention to specific subjects.
