Summary edit

Description
English: The Charles Germain House, 1131 Delaware Avenue, Buffalo, New York, April 2020. The final Buffalo-area work of Silsbee & Marling, the house is an early (1877) example of the Shingle style, which is best exemplified here by its broad roof, its bulky and ponderous appearance overall, and of course, the wooden sawtooth shingles that serve as the siding for the building's upper stories. Conversely, the relatively symmetrical façade is atypical. The band course of foliate ornamentation that crowns the second story, and the recessed arched entranceway, were both stylistic signatures of architect Joseph Lyman Silsbee; sadly, the most striking original feature of the house - namely the series of recessed and protruding porches that once wrapped around the house's north and west sides - were the victim of misguided subsequent alterations. A lifelong resident of Buffalo, Charles Bennett Germain (1844-1926) was an attorney and later served as judge of the U.S. Court for the Northern District of New York; he lived here until some time before 1900. Subsequent owners include Elgood Lufkin (1864-1935), then-general manager of the Snow Steam Pump Works, who lived at the house until 1909; lawyer and real estate investor Edward L. Koons (1861-1946), its owner in the 1910s and early '20s, and Leonard Yerkes (1880-1967), the inventor of rayon and onetime president of the DuPont chemical company. It's now offices.
