Charles Hervey Lilly (1860-1930) was born in Illinois to a farmer & Presbyterian minister father. The eldest of six children, at 13 he assisted his mother with the farming duties and care of the family when his father died. He studied at the State University of Illinois in 1884. Upon graduation, he opened a store in Thomasboro, Illinois. He moved to Seattle in 1889. He began a company with his old partner E.F. Bogardus, later buying out his partner in 1904, and forming the Charles H. Lilly Company. The company began dealing in hay and grain but later dealt in seeds of all kinds. He was married to Julia Putnam and had four children.
