Français : Charlet N.T. - Pencil - Le général Lallemand à Waterloo - ~10.3x15cm. Ce dessin a servi pour illustrer le mémorial de St Hélène du Comte Emmanuel de Las Cases. La gravure sur bois qui figure dans cet ouvrage de référence (p657, tome 2 édition de 1842, « Napoléon dans l’exil ») a été réalisée par un artiste médiocre. Le Colonel de La Combe écrit dans la biographie de l’artiste :
« Et si l'on trouvait qu'en cette occasion Charlet est au dessous de lui-même, que l'on compare ses dessins à ceux qui ont illustré d'autres livres du même genre, et on reconnaîtra sa supériorité. Il faut savoir aussi qu'à l'époque où Charlet fit cette illustration, les artistes n'étaient pas aussi bien avisés qu'ils l'ont été depuis, c'est à dire ne traçaient pas eux-mêmes leurs dessins sur le bois, les graveurs pouvant suivre le trait original du maître, comme cela se pratique aujourd'hui. Alors ce dessin original était copié sur bois par un autre artiste, et remis au graveur. On peut dire qu'il était deux fois défiguré, en quelque sorte. Un jour que Charlet était plus mécontent que de coutume : Voyez, me disait-il dans son langage pittoresque, c'est la mort chargée de traduire la vie. » Le texte accompagnant cette vignette dans l’ouvrage de Las Cases est censé être de la bouche de Napoléon, à savoir : « Lallemand a beaucoup de résolution il a le feu sacré. Il commandait les chasseurs de la garde à Waterloo : il enfonça quelques uns de vos bataillons. ». . |
