English: Chatterley Whitfield Colliery - Hesketh shaft with (left) the winding engine house. This site retains the most complete set of traditional colliery buildings in the UK. Formerly operated as a museum, with underground visits, this project ran into financial difficulties. Problems with contamination have meant that recent attempts to reopen parts of the site to the public have not proved successful. The site has now been designated as a redevelopment area, with the intention of integrating the heritage aspects of the site with small businesses. Pictures within the site were taken during a special Open Day in 2004. |
