Vue panoramique de l'axe principal est-ouest du temple avec à gauche au 2ème plan une pagode moderne Le Bakong est le temple-montagne d'Etat du Roi Indravarman 1er (877-889). Il est consacré au culte hindouiste shivaïte et au dieu Indreshvara (représenté sous forme de linga). Il est orienté vers l'est, construit sur une levée de terre de 900 m sur 700 m et comprend cinq gradins formant une pyramide de 14 mètres de hauteur. Les soubassements sont pour la 1ère fois construits en grès et les tours en briques (elles sont postérieures de 2 siècles à la pyramide). Des statues d'éléphants, gardiens des points intermédiaires, sont situées aux angles des 3 premiers étages. Le temple-montagne est entouré de douves remplies d'eau, symbolisant l'océan primordial de la cosmogonie hindouiste. Au sommet, se dresse une tour-sanctuaire représentant le Kailâsa, la demeure du dieu Shiva (construite dans le style d'Angkor et restaurée de 1936 à 1943 par l'archéologue français Maurice Glaize. voir aussi l'album de 2008 www.flickr.com/photos/dalbera/sets/72157604127419796/with... |
