Chemehuevi Indian woman basket maker, making splints, ca.1900
Photograph of a Chemehuevi Indian woman basket maker, making splints, ca.1900. She is kneeling on the ground holding a straw in her mouth with one hand. In her other hand she holds additional straws. She is wearing a long print dress under a plaid blanket pulled about her shoulders, and a kerchief wrapped around her head. A large basket sits on either side of her. A bundle of straws sits in front of her. The wall of a stick and mud dwelling is behind her. Another woman sits on the ground with her back to a structural wooden piller (and to the camera). Beside her are two kittens and three dogs.
