Chert nodule in limestone in the Mississippian of Kentucky, USA. The brown-colored structure at the center of the photo is a chert nodule (the bluish-gray, boxy thing is a light fixture). Chert is a cryptocrystalline, quartzose sedimentary rock. It is not readily prone to dissolution by slightly acidic groundwater, unlike limestone. In cave passages, chert is an erosion-resistant unit and often protrudes slightly to prominently from the surrounding limestone walls. The brown coloration is due to a coating of iron oxide. The wavy, ridge-like structures in the limestone near the bottom of the photo are scallops, which are asymmetrical dissolutional features formed by flowing water. They somewhat resemble asymmetrical ripple marks, in that they form in a one-directional current, and the short side of each scallop represents the downstream direction.
