DESCRIPTION Photograph of the Cheshire Railroad in Keene New Hampshire, taken in West Yard about 1900. The engineer in the cab window is James Kellogg, the fireman in the gangway is William Norse, the yard clerk in front of the drive is Barney Peters, the conductor in shirt sleeves is Thomas Gorman, the brakeman in light jumper is J. Edward Wood, and the yardmaster leaning on the engine is James Hayes. The Cheshire Railroad depot was built in 1847 on six acres on what is now Gilbo Avenue. The Cheshire Railroad started in South Ashburnham Mass. and then to Winchendon, Troy, and Keene. The track was completed in 1848 and opened for business in May 1848. The first train to arrive was from Boston. By July 1848, there were two regular trains a day between Boston and Keene. The line was extended to Bellows Falls VT in 1849.
