English: Chesterfield: Up freight Class H approaching, 1955. View northward from the footbridge north of Chesterfield Midland station, on the immensely busy four-track main line from Sheffield, Rotherham etc., south of Tapton Junction where the original York & North Midland Railway joined the later line through Sheffield, to proceed south of Chesterfield through Clay Cross to Derby, Birmingham etc. on the one hand and to south towards London (and Nottingham) by the Erewash Valley. This is a typical freight of the time, headed by a Stanier 8F 2-8-0, No. 48153, which was built in 1942 and happened to be one of the last surviving BR steam locomotives - withdrawn in 3/68. |
