Summary edit

Description

Women clad in lovely colors descend the steps of the house associated with French poet and enfant terrible Arthur Rimbaud (1854 - 1891), in Harar, Ethiopia.

Rimbaud lived in the southeastern city of Harar from 1884 to 1891. Having abandoned writing in his early 20s, Rimbaud supported himself in Harar as a merchant in coffee and arms. Stricken with what would ultimately be diagnosed as cancer, Rimbaud left his beloved Harar in 1891 for France, never to return.

Sources differ as to whether Rimbaud actually lived in this magnificent mansion. Some contend Rimbaud built the house; others, that he taught French there. Others have concluded Rimbaud did not live there at all.

In any case, this beautiful building is officially known as the "Rimbaud House," and it was restored with Ethiopian, French and Italian funding in the late 90s.
