L’Art Institute of Chicago abrite l'une des plus importantes collections d'art aux États-Unis, et est le deuxième plus grand musée d'art au pays après le Met de New-York. Ouvert au public depuis 1879, le musée a été établi initialement à l'angle sud-ouest de State et de Monroe Street, mais lors de l'Exposition universelle de 1893, la ville construisit un nouveau bâtiment pour abriter les collections de l'Art Institute. Depuis 1893, le musée se trouve au 111 South Michigan Avenue. Entre 1893 et 2005, l'Art Institute a été agrandi cinq fois, pour l'amener à une superficie totale de 70 000 m². En 2005, le musée a commencé un nouveau projet d'expansion, La Modern Wing, dessinée par Renzo Piano. Ouverte le 16 mai 2009, la Modern Wing a ajouté 24 150 m² au musée pour porter la superficie totale du musée à presque 100 000 m². Le budget de la Modern Wing a été de 350 millions de $2,3, et la construction de la Modern Wing a été financée par des donations de riches citoyens de Chicago. Dans le nouveau bâtiment, le musée compte mieux mettre en valeur sa collection moderne qu'il estime être la troisième plus importante au monde (après celles du Centre Pompidou et du MoMA). Le musée est particulièrement renommé pour sa collection de peintures impressionnistes et post-impressionnistes. Selon un consensus bien établi, ces collections sont, après celles du musée d'Orsay, les plus importantes au monde. On notera particulièrement "Un dimanche après-midi à l'Île de la Grande Jatte" de Seurat, "La Place de l'Europe", "temps de pluie", de Caillebotte, "Sur la terrasse" de Renoir, une des trois versions de" La Chambre" de van Gogh à Arles, un célèbre Autoportrait (1887) de Vincent van Gogh, et une trentaine de peintures de Monet, y compris une sélection des "Nénuphars", un Pont japonais, deux exemplaires de Waterloo Bridge, un "Parlement de Londres", une "Arrivée du train de Normandie", "Gare Saint-Lazare" et six "Meules de foin".

The Art Institute of Chicago (AIC) is an encyclopedic fine art museum located in Chicago, Illinois's Grant Park. The Art Institute has one of the world's most notable collections of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art in its permanent collection. Its diverse holdings also include significant Old Master works, American art, European and American decorative arts, Asian art and modern and contemporary art. It is located at 111 South Michigan Avenue in the Chicago Landmark Historic Michigan Boulevard District. The museum is associated with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and is overseen by Director and President James Cuno. At one million square feet, it is the second largest art museum in the United States behind only the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
