日本語: 竹南庄。基隆を愛した縱貫鐵道は，新竹街の南方十一哩，竹南庄に於に分岐し，一は海岸に沿ひ，一は山間を縫ひつつ臺中市を經由し，兩者は再び追分に於に合し南下する。北部と南部との交通は海岸線を利用した方が時間の上に於て遙かに便利なので，近時，竹南驛は，貨客の集散頻繁となるに至った。街區雜然として住民の生活程度は甚た低いが，將來發展の餘地はあるであらう。（柯設偕）
