Caption (not shown): Sir Shengtung [sic] Liang Cheng, K.C.M.G., who succeeds Wu Ting Fang as Chinese Minister to the United States, was one of a group of high-born Chinese sent abroad some twenty-eight years ago for an education. He studied at Hartford for four years and then went to Andover, graduating with the class of '81, in which he was prominent as a student and famous as a baseball pitcher. On returning home he entered the diplomatic service and was sent to England as a member of the Jubilee Committee, bringing away a title by favor of Queen Victoria. He is a widower with seven children, the eldest a girl of sixteen. Like Mr. Wu, he is a brilliant orator.
