Description
English: Picture shows tomb of the Chief & his near ones. Chaukhandi Tombs is an old graveyard of ancestors of Jokhio clan. Situated on N5 (national highway) at the outskirts of Karachi between Landhi & Gulshan-e-Hadeed. I went there with my brother who was not in good health. It was very hot & I got sunburn & dehydration. My brother kept waiting under shade & chatted with a young man from Jokhio clan. Before this I came here in December year 2000. Graves are made of stones with fine carving work. It is said that there are more than 1000 carving patterns. Carvings are for a purpose & symbols signify details about the dead. For example turban means male, jewelry means female. Various war weapons are also seen like sword & shield, spear, dagger, bow & arrow & others. As guide told, sign of birds on grave showed the occupation of dead as a bird catcher or hunter. Multistory grave means the dead was of a higher status in some way. Graves of kids are also there. People from lower status have graves without carvings.
