DescriptionChristopher Columbus stability test.jpg |
The S.S. Christopher Columbus was a whaleback excursion liner designed by Alexander McDougall and built in 1892-1893 in Superior, Wisconsin by American Steel Barge Company for service to ferry passengers to and from the World's Columbian Exposition, and later placed in general and excursion service to various ports around the Great Lakes. This photo, used on a postcard, was taken during stability testing of the Columbus following the w:SS Eastland capsize disaster. Tugs are trying to tip her over. She was reportedly loaded with sandbags representing a full complement of passengers, all on one side. |
