Summary edit
DescriptionChugwater Formation (Upper Triassic; Red Hill, Seminoe Mountains, Wyoming, USA) 1.jpg |
English: Redbeds in the Triassic of Wyoming, USA.
Redbeds are hematite-rich siliciclastic sedimentary rocks (shale, siltstone, sandstone, conglomerate). Hematite is iron oxide, Fe2O3. Redbeds become common in the rock record starting at about 1.8 billion years ago, in the late Paleoproterozoic. At that time, atmospheric oxygen (O2) levels were high enough to result in "rusting" of iron at Earth's surface. Redbeds are especially common in nonmarine Permian and Triassic successions. Seen here are redbeds of Late Triassic age in Wyoming. The red rocks are shales. The light-colored horizons are sandstones. Stratigraphy: Chugwater Formation, Upper Triassic Locality: roadcut on the eastern side of Seminoe Road (Route 357) at Red Hill, west of Seminoe Reservoir, southern flanks of the Seminoe Mountains, northern Carbon County, south-central Wyoming, USA (42° 07' 44.36" North latitude, 106° 54' 41.43" West longitude) |
