English: "A Map of the World at a Glance" (Tianxia Dazong Yilan Zhitu), showing China, Korea, and the Ryukyus. The Sinetic term tianxia—"the land(s) beneath Heaven"—was variously used for the entire world, the Chinese empire, or the lands of the Chinese cultural sphere including Korea. The serpentine shape northwest of China is the Gobi Desert conceived as a natural barrier beyond the Great Wall and Willow Palisade, both depicted. Tsushima Island shown as larger than Jeju. Okinawa shown as larger than Taiwan or Hainan. The Yellow River—colored gold—shown flowing south of Shandong.
