Description
English: Church of St John the Baptist, Honiley The photograph is taken from the site of the original Honiley Hall, "a long, low gabled house of timber", late 16th or early 17th century, demolished around 1820. The dedication of the Baroque church, built 1723, derives from the ancient St John's Well nearby, whose waters reputedly had healing powers and were used for baptisms. Douglas Hickman's 'Warwickshire' (Shell/Faber 1979) tells the delicious story that the designs for the church were drawn by Sir Christopher Wren himself, on a tablecloth, whilst dining with the patron, J. Saunders of Honiley Hall.
