Description

Purple Sunbird Cinnyris asiaticus, nominate race Cinnyris asiaticus asiaticus. This is an eclipse male. While I have seen photos of the male in its full glory , the yellow patch on the crown is not commonly visible. None of the guides I have referred to mention it as a distinguishing mark. Presumably with all the features and colors being so obvious in the field this minor mark is of relatively little importance. One suggestion is that this an artefact - pollen from flowers visited. 5 January 2009, Jhalana Dungri, Jaipur, India
