La Cité is the island in the middle of the Seine. The Pont Neuf is currently the oldest bridge in Paris. It was built from 1578 to 1605, and the original structure is still standing. At the time of its construction, the name "neuf" (which means "new") was given to distinguish it from all of the very old bridges in Paris.
