Description
English: Clachnaharry: The Gateway to Ireland! The sign says it all, but remember that a lot of Scotland gets in the way before Ireland is sighted. Today the gates at the sea lock are operated hydraulically but when Mr Thomas Telford completed his work two hundred years ago genuine elbow power was the driving force. The circle on the ground in front of the sign would have housed a large capstan and as many burly men as could be mustered would have sweated and pushed to wind the gates open and closed with chains and cables. The railway bridge in the far background has opened and the expected ship is on its way.
