Description
English: The Clare-Barcalo-Metz House, 2780 Main Street, Buffalo, New York, February 2021. Erected in 1901, this is a fine example of the Queen Anne school of architecture that prevailed around the turn of the century. The requisite façadal asymmetry and corner tower are both present here; the latter is modest in scale, round and with a conical roof, and notice how the eave of the roof wraps around it at the left base of the main gable. Most impressive of all is the detail on and around the full-width front porch, with Doric columns and an elegant balustrade delineating its outer edge and a handsome pediment with carved foliate reliefs above the front step. A partially enclosed balcony characterizes the second-story façade. The house passed through the hands of numerous short-term owners in its earliest years, namely those of accountant Edward J. L. Clare (1857-1934) of the U.S. Tube Company, who lived in the house until 1904, and furniture manufacturer and Barcalounger innovator Edward J. Barcalo (1870-1963), who moved in 1907 to the Depew Avenue residence for which he's best known, and lumberman Joseph Metz (1838-1912). It's now the office of attorney Terrence D. McKelvey.
