Description
English: Cleansing reedbed at Chester Zoo The elephants, in their nearby enclosure, produce large amounts of water containing much organic matter from their dung. This water is treated in a pool nearby. The reed stems filter off the solid organic matter. The pool itself contains many bacteria and other micro-organisms which, together with oxygen from the plants, oxidise the waste to produce a fairly clean effluent.
