English: On September 25, 2023, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of a beautifully clear early-autumn day over the Alps.

The Alps form a crescent stretching from the Mediterranean coasts of Italy and France to Vienna, Austria. The peaks of this long mountain range are capped with snow year-round, and home to thousands of glaciers, some of which are melting rapidly due to a warming climate.

Copious winter snowfall means that the Alps are the most important water-supplying mountain range in Europe. The Danube, Rhine, Rhône and Po Rivers rise in the Alps, with their drainage basins supporting many millions of people as well as agriculture, industrial, and recreational use. The Po Valley, south of the Alps, is a rich agricultural region, and especially dependent on snowmelt to grow crops.
