Summary edit

Description
English: Clearing with Silver Birch on Pitstone Common The natural progression from open land to woodland in this areas starts with hawthorn, then silver birch (which is comparatively short-lived) and then major woodland trees. An open clearing with silver birch, but no undergrowth, hawthorn, or older trees is clearly managed – perhaps to provide grazing for the deer. It is worth noting that areas of the Ashridge Estate with many silver birch are comparatively newly wooded.
