Summary edit

Description
English: Built in 1913-1914, this Tudor Revival-style mansion was designed by Edward B. Green of Green & Wicks for Carolyn Jewett Clement and her husband, industrialist Stephen Merrell Clement, to replace an earlier home on the site built in 1855 by Erastus S. Prosser and inhabited by Carolyn’s father Augustus Franklin Tripp from 1881 until his death in 1908, whereupon it was inherited by Carolyn and Stephen. The previous house was demolished in 1911, with a few elements, including an ornate fireplace mantel, being salvaged and reinstalled in the present house. The house features a rusticated stone exterior with stone trim, gabled roof, wall dormers, bay windows with leaded glass, a landscaped front terrace enclosed by a Gothic-style railing, stone chimneys, entrance tower with a crenellated parapet on the north side, and wall dormers on the south wing’s gable roof. The house was donated to the American Red Cross by Carolyn Clement in 1941, which has been housed in the building since that time. The house is a contributing structure in the Delaware Avenue Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
