Description

Zion Lutheran Church is located in this red brick Gothic Revival-style building at the intersection of Prospect Avenue and East 30th Street in Cleveland's Central neighborhood. Constructed in 1902 and designed by the firm Walker and Weeks, with William Dunn designing the church's school, the complex houses a congregation that has existed since 1843, founded by German immigrants as the first Lutheran congregation in Cleveland. At one point, the congregation was large and vibrant enough to have an associated school, but it closed in 1974 due to declining enrollment. In 1984, the church and school were listed on the National Register of Historic Places, along with several other buildings along Prospect Avenue. Today, the church remains open, though it has transitioned somewhat from a worship center into more charity and community outreach services, due to the change in the surrounding neighborhood's demographics.
